Headache and bleeding between periods

Spotting may follow hormonal contraception, ovulation, irritation, infection, fibroids, polyps, cervical dysplasia, or changes in the womb lining. Chlamydia can cause bleeding between periods, sometimes with pelvic pain or unusual discharge. Headache may relate to hormones, stress, dehydration, anaemia, or a medicine. The combination does not by itself show which condition is present. Note the timing, amount, colour, pain, discharge, sexual-health risks, contraception, and any chance of pregnancy.

Arrange a routine appointment if bleeding recurs, follows sex, lasts beyond expected spotting, or is new for you. A clinician may review contraception, check for infection, examine the cervix, and arrange pregnancy testing or imaging when appropriate. Keep a record of bleeding and headaches, drink fluids, eat regularly, and use only suitable pain relief. Do not stop prescribed contraception without advice.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, marked weakness, severe pelvic pain, fever, pregnancy with bleeding, or a sudden severe headache. Emergency assessment is needed for confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, vision loss, or a stiff neck. Contact a clinician promptly if bleeding follows sex, occurs after menopause, or is accompanied by persistent pelvic pain or unusual discharge.

Ask whether your bleeding pattern needs cervical screening, infection testing, blood tests, or an ultrasound. Ask which symptoms suggest fibroids, polyps, or a cervical problem, and which headache treatments fit your medicines and health history.
