Headache after heat stroke: what to know

Heat stroke is a medical emergency involving dangerous overheating and possible changes in brain function. Headache may occur during or after the event, but it does not show that recovery is complete. Fever-like temperature, vomiting, confusion, unusual behaviour, fainting, seizures, or poor coordination are especially concerning. Heat exhaustion is less severe, but it can progress when cooling and fluid replacement are delayed.

Even when the person feels more alert, heat stroke can leave dehydration and other physiological stress behind. A healthcare team may need to monitor temperature, neurological function, and fluid balance.

If heat stroke is suspected or has just occurred, call emergency services and begin cooling while waiting. Move the person to a cooler place, remove excess clothing, and cool the skin with water, wet cloths, or a fan. Stay with them and monitor breathing. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused, drowsy, vomiting repeatedly, or unable to swallow safely. IV Fluid Therapy may be used by clinicians when treatment is required.

Seek emergency help immediately for any headache after a suspected heat stroke, particularly with confusion, collapse, seizure, repeated vomiting, severe weakness, abnormal behaviour, trouble walking, or difficulty waking. A fever or worsening headache after the event also requires urgent review. Do not return to exercise, work in heat, or drive until a clinician has advised you.

Ask what monitoring or follow-up is needed, when it is safe to return to heat or physical activity, and which symptoms should prompt a return to emergency care. Explain the exposure, cooling steps, temperature readings if available, vomiting, and any change in alertness.
