What should you know about head skin itching?

The appearance and location help narrow the possibilities. Dry, cracked skin may point toward asteatotic eczema, while recurring inflamed patches can occur with atopic dermatitis. A new shampoo, dye, oil, helmet, or hair product may trigger contact dermatitis. Thick scale can occur with psoriasis, and intense itch with burrows or affected household contacts raises concern for scabies.

A circular or moist irritated patch can be associated with a skin yeast infection. Hives tend to form raised, changing welts. Itching alone cannot identify the cause, and scratching can create breaks that become infected.

Pause newly introduced hair and skin products, rinse gently with lukewarm water, and avoid scratching or scraping scale. Keep nails short and use a cool compress for brief relief. Do not share combs, hats, towels, or bedding if an infestation or infection is possible. A clinician can examine the scalp and choose treatment based on what is visible.

Arrange a clinical assessment when itching persists, spreads, disturbs sleep, causes hair loss, or produces sores, crusting, or drainage. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread rapidly developing welts, or a severe reaction after a product.

Tell the clinician when the itch began, what products touch the area, whether anyone else is itchy, and whether you see scale, bumps, sores, or hair loss. Ask whether testing or prescription treatment is needed.
