Head scalp skin peeling: what to know

Fine flakes can occur when the scalp is dry or irritated by cleansing, dye, heat, or styling products. Greasy scale and redness may point toward an inflammatory scalp problem. Well-defined thick scale can occur with psoriasis, while peeling after prolonged sun exposure may be sunburn. A fungal infection can affect the scalp or spread from another body site. The location, redness, itch, tenderness, and hair changes are more useful than the flakes alone.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Stop products that sting or were introduced shortly before the peeling began. Do not pick or pull attached skin; this can create cracks and bleeding. Protect the scalp from further sun and heat, and keep combs and towels personal until an infection has been excluded. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a medicated product is appropriate for the pattern.

Arrange prompt care for blisters, open or infected-looking skin, pus, marked swelling, fever, severe pain, or peeling after a chemical exposure. Make an appointment if the problem spreads, returns repeatedly, causes hair loss, or does not settle after irritants are removed. Peeling with thick plaques elsewhere on the body also merits review.

Ask whether the appearance fits an inflammatory condition, sun injury, or infection; whether testing is needed; and which scalp products, shampoos, or sun-protection measures are suitable while the skin heals.
