Head ringworm: home remedies and treatment

Despite its name, ringworm is caused by a fungus, not a worm. On the scalp it may cause scaly or itchy patches, broken hairs, tenderness, crusting, or areas of hair loss. It can spread through close contact and shared combs, brushes, hats, towels, or bedding. A similar-looking rash may have another cause, so a clinician may inspect the scalp and hair or arrange a test. Delay can allow the infection to spread and can increase inflammation around the hair follicles.

Do not rely on vinegar, essential oils, bleach, or irritating household substances; they can burn the scalp without treating the fungus. Avoid sharing hair tools, wash or disinfect combs and brushes as advised, and launder recently used towels, pillowcases, and hats. Check household members and pets through appropriate professionals if symptoms are present. Follow the prescribed oral antifungal treatment for the full duration, even if the rash looks better earlier. A medicated shampoo may reduce surface spread but may not replace medicine that treats infection within the hair. Keep the scalp clean and avoid picking crusts.

Arrange prompt medical care for scalp swelling, pus, severe tenderness, fever, extensive crusting, or rapidly spreading rash. Seek review if there are smooth or broken-hair patches, swollen glands, or worsening symptoms during treatment. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe reaction after an antifungal medicine. Children with suspected scalp ringworm should be assessed because untreated infection can affect hair growth.
