Head itching and hair falling out: what to know

An itchy scalp may become sore when fingernails break the skin, and ongoing rubbing can loosen hairs or break them near the surface. Flaking, redness, thick plaques, crusting, or small spots of hair loss can help a clinician distinguish irritation from a skin condition. Possible explanations include Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis, or a fungal or yeast-related problem. Hair loss can also have causes separate from the itch, so the timing matters.

Pause newly introduced dyes, oils, fragranced products, and styling treatments. Wash gently with lukewarm water, keep nails short, and avoid picking or tight hairstyles. Do not share combs, hats, or brushes while an infection is possible. Photograph the scalp and note whether hairs shed from the root or snap. Arrange a dermatology assessment if shedding continues, patches appear, or the scalp remains inflamed.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly enlarging bald patches, pus, marked swelling, severe pain, fever, or tender areas that feel warm. Urgent assessment is also appropriate if swelling involves the face or breathing becomes difficult after a product exposure.
