What should you know about head compression garment?

Short answer

A head compression garment applies gentle, measured pressure to help manage head or neck swelling, but it should be fitted and monitored by a trained clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main purpose
Support management of head or neck lymphoedema
Fitting
A trained clinician should assess fit, pressure, skin, and airway comfort

What the garment does

After cancer treatment or lymph-node surgery, lymph fluid can collect in the face, jaw, neck, or scalp. A compression garment supports the affected tissues and may help fluid move through working lymphatic pathways. It does not remove the underlying cause and is not interchangeable with any hat, bandage, or tight clothing. The shape, fabric, seams, and pressure need to suit your swelling and skin.

A garment may be used alongside skin care, movement, breathing exercises, manual techniques, and other parts of [Lymphoedema Therapy](/treatments/survivorship-and-rehabilitation/lymphoedema-therapy/). Your clinician may change the wearing schedule as swelling and comfort change.

Using it well

Have the garment fitted by a lymphoedema specialist and check that it does not obstruct your eyes, mouth, nose, or airway. Follow the prescribed wearing schedule rather than increasing pressure or time by yourself. Put it on with clean, dry skin, smooth folds, and inspect the skin after removing it. Wash it as instructed so its shape and pressure remain consistent. Bring it to appointments if the fit changes, swelling moves, or fastening becomes difficult. A related overview is available under [Compression Garment](/materials/compression-garment/).

When to remove it and seek help

Remove the garment and seek prompt clinical advice if you develop worsening pain, numbness, skin colour change, marked tingling, new dizziness, or pressure affecting breathing or swallowing. Get urgent help for sudden facial or neck swelling, severe breathlessness, or difficulty swallowing saliva. Broken skin, a new rash, or signs of infection also need assessment before compression continues.

Questions for your doctor

Where should the garment apply pressure? How long should I wear it, and when should I remove it? What skin changes mean the fit needs review? Can I sleep, exercise, or travel while wearing it? Which swelling changes need same-day advice?

Questions people ask

Can I buy any tight headwear instead?

No. Ordinary headwear may create uneven pressure or interfere with breathing and swallowing; use a garment selected for your anatomy and condition.

What if the garment feels painful?

Remove it and contact the fitting clinician, especially if pain, numbness, colour change, or breathing difficulty occurs.
