Head cold and sore throat: what to know

A common cold can inflame the throat directly, while mucus draining from an irritated nose may make it feel raw. A dry room, dehydration, smoke and mouth breathing can add to the discomfort. Allergic rhinitis can cause throat irritation through postnasal drainage. Acid reflux may produce a recurring sore or burning throat, especially after meals or on waking. Influenza and COVID-19 can overlap with cold symptoms and may bring fever, aches or marked tiredness. Tonsillitis, strep throat and glandular fever are other possibilities; swollen neck glands, pus on the tonsils, severe pain or a lack of typical cold symptoms warrant clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Sip fluids regularly and choose warm or cool drinks according to what feels soothing. Soft foods, rest and avoiding smoke can reduce irritation. Gargling with warm salt water may help some adults and older children who can gargle safely. Use simple pain relief only as directed on the label and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or have a long-term condition. Do not share cups or utensils, and wash hands after coughing or sneezing.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, a muffled voice, severe dehydration, or swelling that is rapidly increasing. Arrange prompt medical advice for severe one-sided throat pain, a persistent high fever, a rash, significant neck swelling, or symptoms that worsen after initial improvement. A clinician can examine the throat and decide whether testing or targeted treatment is appropriate.
