Head cold and sneezing: what to know

A viral cold can inflame the nose and trigger bursts of sneezing, often alongside a runny or blocked nose, scratchy throat and cough. Allergic rhinitis is more likely when sneezing comes in repeated bouts with itchy eyes, an itchy nose, or clear discharge after contact with pollen, house dust mites or pets. The timing and accompanying symptoms help separate these patterns, but they do not provide a diagnosis by themselves. Fever, pronounced aches or a sudden worsening can point toward a broader respiratory infection such as influenza; other infections can overlap with cold symptoms.

Rest and drink fluids, and use tissues rather than your hands when sneezing. Wash hands afterwards and improve airflow in shared spaces. Saline drops or a gentle nasal rinse may remove irritants; follow product directions and use safe water for rinsing. If itching and repeated sneezing suggest allergy, a pharmacist can discuss an appropriate allergy medication, taking your age, pregnancy status and existing medicines into account. Reduce exposure to a suspected trigger where practical.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, or severe drowsiness. Contact a clinician if symptoms are unusually intense, persist without improvement, interfere with sleep, or keep returning in a trigger-related pattern. Seek earlier advice if you have a weakened immune system or a long-term condition that makes respiratory infections harder to manage.
