Head cold with no fever: what to know

A runny or blocked nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and mild aches can occur without a raised temperature. No fever does not rule out Common Cold or COVID-19, and symptoms alone cannot identify the virus. Bronchitis can follow an upper-respiratory illness when cough becomes the main problem. In young children, Bronchiolitis or Croup may affect breathing differently. Brucellosis, Chickenpox, and Cellulitis have distinct patterns and should be considered from the full history rather than the absence of fever alone.

Rest, drink fluids, keep the room comfortably ventilated, and use saline nasal care if helpful. Warm drinks may soothe a throat, while honey is suitable only for people old enough to have it safely. Follow label directions for any pain or cough medicine, and ask a pharmacist about combinations. Reduce close contact when you are actively unwell and follow local advice if COVID-19 is possible. Monitor breathing, hydration, and how symptoms change rather than relying on temperature alone.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, confusion, chest pain, inability to drink, or markedly reduced urination. Arrange a medical review for a cough that is worsening, symptoms that are not settling, a new rash, painful skin redness, or illness in a young infant. People with long-term conditions or reduced immunity may need advice earlier, even without fever.
