What should you know about head and shoulders oily?

Sebum is the natural oil made by scalp glands. When it builds up, hair may look greasy soon after washing and flakes can cling to the scalp or hair. Dandruff can present with scalp flaking without marked redness. Seborrheic dermatitis may add itch, redness, or greasy scale around the scalp, hairline, ears, or eyebrows. Oily scalp alone does not establish either condition.

Wash often enough to remove oil and styling residue, using fingertips rather than scratching with nails. Rinse thoroughly and avoid putting heavy oils or fragranced products directly on an irritated scalp. A clinician or pharmacist can help choose a medicated shampoo when ordinary cleansing does not control flakes or itch; follow its label directions and allow the product to contact the scalp as instructed. Stop a product that causes marked burning or swelling.

Seek assessment for painful bumps, pus, crusting, spreading redness, bleeding, or areas of hair loss. Arrange a dermatology review when persistent oiliness comes with thick scale, strong itch, or inflammation, or when careful shampoo use has not helped. Prompt care is appropriate if facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening reaction follows a product.
