What should you know about head and body itching?

Short answer
Head and body itching can reflect dry skin, dermatitis, infection, an infestation, or another condition, so the skin pattern and timing matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the itching may mean
Itching with rough, cracked skin can occur when the skin barrier is dry or irritated. Red, inflamed patches may occur with Atopic Dermatitis or Contact Dermatitis. Greasy scale around the scalp, ears, eyebrows, or chest can fit Seborrheic Dermatitis, while silvery plaques may fit Psoriasis. Intense night-time itching with small bumps or burrows needs assessment for Scabies. Hives tend to form raised, shifting welts. A rash that is painful, oozing, crusted, or spreading may signal infection or significant inflammation.
What you can do now
Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then apply a plain moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Pause newly introduced soaps, hair products, fragrances, and detergents until the trigger is clearer. Wear loose, breathable clothing and avoid overheating. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or anti-parasite products broadly without advice, because the wrong treatment can mask the pattern or irritate skin.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for itching with facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash. Arrange prompt medical assessment for fever, pus, severe pain, yellow crusting, widespread peeling, or itching that is disrupting sleep and daily activity. A clinician can examine the scalp and body, review medicines and exposures, and decide whether testing or prescription treatment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern they see, whether a medicine or product could be contributing, and which treatment is suitable for the affected areas. Mention when the itching began, whether anyone close to you itches, and whether it is worse at night.
