What should you know about HCV RNA PCR test?

PCR means polymerase chain reaction, a laboratory method that makes very small amounts of viral genetic material easier to detect. A detected result supports current hepatitis C infection. An undetected result means the laboratory did not find RNA in that sample; the timing of exposure and the reason for testing still matter. This is different from a rapid antigen test, which looks for viral proteins and may be used for other infections.

Discuss the report with the clinician who ordered it. They can decide whether further liver assessment, repeat testing, or treatment planning is needed. Tell them about possible blood exposure, previous hepatitis C testing, pregnancy, and all medicines or supplements. Avoid sharing items that may carry blood, including needles, razors, and toothbrushes, while the result is being clarified.

Seek urgent care for confusion, vomiting blood, severe abdominal swelling, or yellow skin or eyes with profound weakness. Arrange timely advice after a needlestick, shared injection equipment, or another blood exposure; early assessment can guide testing. Fever, nausea, or tiredness can have many causes and do not by themselves establish hepatitis C.
