What should you know about HCV hepatitis C?

HCV is the virus that causes hepatitis C, an infection that can affect the liver and may cause few symptoms at first. A screening antibody result shows exposure, while a separate test is used to check whether the virus is currently present. A result should be discussed confidentially with a clinician.

Some people notice fatigue, nausea, reduced appetite, or discomfort in the upper abdomen, while others feel well. Ongoing infection can inflame the liver and may lead to scarring over time. Liver enzymes can be normal or abnormal, so a liver function test alone cannot confirm or exclude HCV. The diagnosis depends on the appropriate virus testing.

Arrange a GP consultation to review the test type, timing, possible exposure, liver health, and medicines or supplements. Avoid sharing razors, toothbrushes, or equipment that may carry blood, and do not donate blood while infection is being assessed. Ask about confirmatory testing and specialist follow-up; modern treatment decisions are individualised.

Seek urgent medical help for yellowing of the eyes or skin with confusion, severe drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or intense upper-abdominal pain. Contact a clinician promptly after a recent blood exposure or if fatigue and other symptoms are rapidly worsening.

Ask which test was positive, whether current infection has been confirmed, whether liver function and liver structure need assessment, and whether your household or sexual contacts need advice. Mention pregnancy plans, alcohol intake, vaccinations, and all medicines before treatment is chosen.
