Hatched embryo transfer: what to know

An embryo has an outer covering called the zona pellucida. Before implantation, it normally needs to emerge from that covering, a process called hatching. In assisted hatching, a fertility laboratory makes a small opening or thins part of the covering before transfer. The embryo is then placed into the uterus through a thin catheter. The laboratory and fertility team decide whether this technique fits the embryo and treatment plan.

Take medicines exactly as prescribed, including progesterone support when included in the plan. Follow the clinic's instructions about appointments, bladder preparation, activity, and the pregnancy test date. Ordinary gentle activity is usually more practical than prolonged bed rest, but follow restrictions specific to your procedure. Do not add supplements or stop prescribed medicines without asking the fertility team. Keep a note of pain, bleeding, and medication timing.

Contact the fertility clinic for increasing pelvic pain, bleeding that concerns you, fever, difficulty passing urine, or questions about missed medicines. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, marked breathlessness, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. Mild cramps or light spotting can occur after a procedure, but the clinic can help decide whether your symptoms need examination.

Ask why assisted hatching is being considered, how the embryo was assessed, which medicines to continue, when testing is planned, and which symptoms need urgent review.
