What should you know about Hashimoto's and ulcerative colitis?

Hashimoto’s disease is an immune-related thyroid condition. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation in the lining of the large bowel and may lead to urgency, Diarrhoea, blood or Abdominal Pain. Having one condition does not confirm the other. Tiredness can reflect thyroid imbalance, bowel inflammation, anaemia, poor sleep or another cause, so it deserves a broad review. Your clinicians may coordinate thyroid monitoring with bowel care and medication safety.

Record stool frequency, urgency, blood, pain, appetite, weight change and thyroid symptoms such as unusual cold sensitivity or palpitations. Arrange a GP Consultation when symptoms persist or change. Bring every prescription, supplement and recent test result. Do not stop thyroid or colitis medicine on your own. Your team may use blood tests, stool assessment or other investigations to understand inflammation, blood counts and thyroid function. Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, confusion, or inability to drink. Contact your clinical team promptly for frequent bloody stools, fever, dehydration, worsening weakness or rapid weight loss. Do not wait for a routine thyroid review when bowel symptoms are escalating.
