Hashimoto's disease affects the thyroid. When thyroid hormone levels are outside the target range, people may notice fatigue, temperature sensitivity, muscle aches, or general stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease in which the immune system targets the lining of joints. It commonly presents with pain, swelling, and prolonged stiffness, often affecting matching joints in the hands or feet.

Having thyroid symptoms does not establish rheumatoid arthritis, and joint symptoms should not automatically be assigned to the thyroid. Mention dry skin, hair changes, bowel or eye symptoms, fever, recent infection, and all medicines, because these details help separate possible explanations.

If rheumatoid arthritis is suspected, early specialist assessment can help protect joint movement and guide disease-directed treatment. Anti-inflammatory medication may reduce pain and swelling for some people, but it does not replace assessment or necessarily control the underlying disease. Thyroid treatment should be adjusted using follow-up hormone testing rather than symptoms alone. Gentle range-of-motion activity is usually more suitable than forcing a painful joint.

Seek urgent advice for a suddenly hot and swollen joint with fever, severe weakness, chest symptoms, or a painful red eye with vision changes.
