What should you know about Harvoni and hepatitis C?

Harvoni contains antiviral medicines that act on hepatitis C inside infected liver cells. Treatment choice depends on factors such as the virus type, previous treatment, liver health, pregnancy considerations and other medicines. Hepatitis C can cause no symptoms for a long time, although Fatigue can occur. A clinician may use blood tests to confirm infection, assess liver function and check response during follow-up. Harvoni is not a general treatment for every cause of liver inflammation.

Discuss treatment through a GP Consultation or the specialist team managing your hepatitis C. Give them a complete list of prescriptions, supplements and recreational substances before starting, because interactions can affect treatment. Take each dose exactly as directed and do not share tablets. Ask what to do after a missed dose rather than doubling up. Avoid stopping early without medical advice. A Liver Function Test may be part of the assessment, but liver blood results alone do not show whether the virus has cleared.

Contact your treatment team promptly if you develop a severe or unexpected reaction, yellowing of the skin or eyes, very dark urine, confusion, marked swelling, or persistent vomiting. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, collapse or severe confusion. Report new medicines before taking them during the antiviral course.
