What should you know about hard to swallow sore throat?

A sore throat that makes swallowing difficult can result from infection or irritation, but inability to swallow needs urgent care. Pain may be felt in the throat, tonsils, or nearby neck and can occur with fever, cough, congestion, or hoarseness.

Seek medical advice for dehydration, severe one-sided pain, a persistent high fever, a rash, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
