Hard Tender Lump Under the Skin: What to Know

Tenderness can accompany a boil, inflamed cyst, blocked follicle, or a minor injury. The skin may feel warm or look red as inflammation develops, and drainage can occur later. A skin lump is a symptom with several possible explanations; it does not by itself identify a diagnosis. Basal cell carcinoma can present as a persistent bump, sore, or crusted area, particularly on sun-exposed skin, so a lesion that changes or fails to heal should be checked.

Keep the area clean and avoid squeezing, cutting, or massaging it. Reduce rubbing from straps or tight clothing and try a clean warm compress if there is no open wound. Track its size, tenderness, colour, and any discharge. A clinician may need to inspect the surface and feel the deeper tissue. Depending on the finding, care may include observation, treatment for infection, drainage, or a steroid injection into the skin for a selected inflammatory lump.

Seek prompt care for rapid enlargement, severe pain, spreading redness, fever, pus, red streaks, or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange a skin review for a lump that remains, returns in the same place, bleeds, crusts, or becomes an open sore. Urgent help is appropriate when swelling is extensive or illness is worsening quickly.

Ask what examination features point toward a boil, cyst, or other lump; whether testing or drainage is needed; and how to reduce recurrence in that location.
