Hard red lump under the armpit: what to know

A hard red lump under your armpit needs medical assessment when redness, pain, swelling, or persistence is increasing. Redness often reflects inflammation in the skin or nearby tissue, while an enlarged lymph node can respond to infection or irritation. The appearance alone cannot establish the cause.

Shaving irritation, an inflamed hair follicle, a blocked sweat gland, or a skin infection can produce a tender red lump. Lymph nodes in the armpit drain areas of the arm, chest, and breast, so irritation or infection in those regions can affect them. Breast Cancer and Lymphoma can also involve lymph nodes, but a lump does not confirm either condition.

Arrange a medical appointment and note when the lump began, whether it is changing, and whether redness is spreading. Mention recent shaving, deodorant changes, skin breaks, arm swelling, breast changes, fever, or a recent vaccine. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing it, and wear clothing that does not rub. A clinician may examine the armpit, breast, chest wall, and arm and decide whether tests are needed.

Seek urgent help if redness spreads quickly, swelling grows rapidly, pain is severe, pus is draining, or you feel very unwell. Prompt review is needed for a firm or fixed lump, a lump that persists or enlarges, unexplained weight loss, ongoing fever or night sweats, breast skin or nipple changes, or swelling of the arm.

Ask whether the lump appears skin-based or lymph-node-related, whether the breast and arm need examination, and what changes should prompt faster review. Ask whether imaging or sampling would clarify the finding and how long to monitor it if infection is suspected.
