What should you know about a hard red lump on the breast?

Redness and firmness often occur with inflammation, infection, an abscess, an irritated skin cyst, or injury. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, and some breast cancers can also cause redness or skin thickening, so appearance alone cannot settle the cause. Breastfeeding, a recent procedure, friction, or a break in the skin may be relevant. The pattern of redness, tenderness, warmth, discharge, and general illness helps the clinician decide how quickly you need care.

Contact a doctor or urgent care service for a new hard red lump rather than waiting for repeated self-checks. Note when the redness began, whether it is spreading, and whether you have fever, chills, nipple discharge, or feel weak. Tell the clinician if you are breastfeeding, recently pregnant, injured the area, had an injection or procedure, or have taken antibiotics. Do not massage, squeeze, or puncture the lump. The clinician may examine the skin and deeper tissue and arrange ultrasound or other testing if needed.

Seek same-day medical advice when the breast is hot, painful, or increasingly red, or when fever or feeling unwell accompanies the lump. Get emergency help for severe weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening illness. A persistent red area, skin thickening, nipple inversion, discharge, or armpit swelling also needs timely breast assessment, even if pain improves.
