Hard pimple-like lump under the skin

Deep inflammation can feel firm before a visible head forms and may stay sore for some time. A blocked cyst may have a rounded outline or a small central opening and can flare after seeming quiet. A boil may become increasingly tender, warm, red, and filled with pus. Repeated lumps in the same area, scarring, or drainage deserve a broader assessment. A lesion that does not behave like a pimple, or that changes on the surface, should not be repeatedly treated at home as acne.

Keep the area clean and use a warm, damp compress for short periods if it feels soothing. Avoid squeezing, needles, harsh scrubs, and picking; these can push inflammation deeper and injure the skin. Use non-comedogenic products and reduce friction from tight clothing or equipment. If the lump persists or recurs, a dermatologist can distinguish acne from a cyst, boil, or other growth and choose treatment. An intralesional steroid injection may be considered for selected diagnosed inflammatory lesions.

Book an assessment if the lump lasts, enlarges, repeatedly returns, leaves a scar, or does not respond to gentle care. Seek prompt help for spreading redness, marked warmth, severe pain, pus, fever, or several nearby lesions. Urgent care is appropriate if you feel very unwell or swelling is progressing quickly.
