Hard Movable Lump Under the Skin

A lump that shifts slightly under gentle pressure may be located in the skin or fatty layer, but mobility alone cannot identify it. Note its size relative to a familiar object, firmness, tenderness, surface colour, and whether it seems attached to the skin or deeper tissue.

Inflammation can make a lump sore, warm, or red. A boil may develop tenderness and drainage. A persistent skin growth that crusts, bleeds, ulcerates, or changes should be examined; a movable lump does not by itself indicate a particular diagnosis.

Do not keep prodding it, squeeze it, or try to remove it at home. Reduce rubbing from clothing or equipment and keep the skin intact. Take a clear photograph and note when you first noticed it and whether it is changing.

Book a routine appointment for an unexplained lump that remains or returns. Examination may be enough, although imaging or a sample can sometimes clarify the tissue involved. An intralesional steroid injection is used only for selected inflammatory lesions after diagnosis.

Seek prompt medical care for rapid growth, increasing pain, warmth, spreading redness, pus, fever, bleeding, an open sore, numbness, or reduced movement. Urgent assessment is appropriate when severe swelling or sudden symptoms follow an injury.

Ask which layer the lump seems to arise from, whether its mobility is clinically reassuring, whether it needs monitoring or testing, and what exact changes should bring you back sooner.
