What should you know about a hard lump in the left breast?

Breast tissue can feel firmer because of normal hormonal changes, a cyst, a fibroadenoma, an area of inflammation, or another benign change. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, but many lumps are not cancer. The left-sided location does not determine the diagnosis. Pay attention to whether the lump is new, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and whether it feels fixed or moves beneath the fingers. Skin dimpling, a change in nipple shape, or unusual discharge adds useful information for the clinician.

Arrange an appointment with a doctor or breast clinic for a hands-on examination. Note when you first found the lump, its position, any change in size, and related symptoms. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent injury, fever, medicines, and any personal or family history that may affect assessment. The clinician may recommend imaging such as an ultrasound or mammogram, and sometimes a sample of tissue, depending on the examination and your age and circumstances. Do not repeatedly press the area, as this can make it sore and harder to judge.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump is rapidly changing, the breast becomes hot and red, or you have fever and feel unwell. Arrange timely assessment for a new lump that remains, a nipple turning inward, bloody or spontaneous discharge, skin dimpling, or a swollen area in the armpit. These signs do not prove cancer, but they should not be watched indefinitely.

Ask what the examination suggests, which imaging is appropriate, and when you should expect the result. You can also ask whether the lump may relate to your cycle, what changes should prompt earlier contact, and whether a follow-up visit is needed if imaging is reassuring.
