What should you know about hard lipoma?

Lipomas commonly sit beneath the skin and may move slightly when pressed. They can occur on the neck, shoulders, back, arms, or thighs and may be noticed because of their shape rather than discomfort. Firmness can reflect depth, surrounding tissue, or a different type of lump, so touch alone cannot establish the diagnosis. A clinician may examine its size, mobility, depth, and relationship to nearby structures, then decide whether imaging or another test is appropriate.

Do not squeeze, puncture, massage aggressively, or try to remove a lump yourself. Note when it appeared, whether it is growing, and whether movement, clothing, or pressure causes symptoms. Arrange a routine examination if it is new or uncertain. If it is confirmed as a lipoma, observation may be reasonable when it causes no problems; removal can be discussed when it is painful, restrictive, cosmetically bothersome, or difficult to diagnose. Seek prompt assessment for a lump that grows quickly, becomes fixed, causes persistent pain, produces numbness or weakness, or changes the overlying skin. Urgent care is appropriate for severe pain, marked redness, drainage, or fever. Do not assume a firm lump is a lipoma simply because another family member has had one.
