What should you know about hard crusty bumps on skin?

A crust is dried fluid, scale, or surface keratin over a raised area. Folliculitis can create tender bumps around hairs; Heat Rash tends to appear where sweat and friction collect. Keratosis Pilaris often causes many small rough follicular bumps, while Milia are usually tiny, firm, pale cysts. Lichen Planus may produce itchy, flat-topped bumps. These patterns overlap, so colour, itch, pain, location, duration, and whether new bumps are appearing all matter.

Clean the area gently and avoid picking, scraping, shaving across it, or applying multiple harsh products. Use a plain moisturiser if the surrounding skin is dry, and reduce heat, sweat, and rubbing when these trigger symptoms. Photograph the area in consistent lighting and note changes in number, size, crusting, or discomfort. A clinician can match treatment to the cause; options may include oral Antihistamine Treatment for itch or Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal) for a suitable diagnosed lesion.

Seek prompt assessment if a bump grows quickly, bleeds without clear injury, repeatedly crusts, becomes very painful, or develops spreading redness, warmth, pus, or fever. Arrange a skin examination for a bump that does not settle, is firm and fixed, or looks different from nearby lesions. Urgent care is appropriate for rapidly spreading swelling or feeling unwell. These signs guide timing; they do not identify the diagnosis by themselves.

Ask whether the bump starts in a hair follicle, whether the crust needs sampling, and which products should be stopped. Ask what change would require review, and whether treatment is aimed at inflammation, infection, a cyst, or the surface lesion itself.
