Hands look swollen

Swelling in both hands can follow heat, prolonged sitting, exercise, or temporary fluid shifts. One swollen hand may follow a knock, overuse, bite, skin infection, or a problem affecting a joint or circulation. Redness, warmth, and tenderness suggest active irritation or infection. Swelling around several small joints with repeated stiffness can occur with Rheumatoid Arthritis, but the appearance alone cannot identify its cause. After a fall onto the hand, wrist swelling with pain or reduced movement may indicate a Distal Radius Fracture and should be examined.

Remove rings, bracelets, and tight watches. Compare both hands and note when the change began, whether the skin is red or warm, and whether you can fully bend and straighten the fingers. Rest the affected hand and raise it comfortably. After a recent minor injury, a wrapped cool pack for short periods may ease discomfort; protect the skin and stop if numbness develops. Avoid forceful exercise or self-manipulation until the cause is clearer.

Arrange medical advice for swelling that persists, recurs, limits movement, or has no clear explanation. Seek same-day care for a hot, red, painful hand, fever, spreading redness, or swelling after a significant injury. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, sudden weakness, or a hand that becomes pale, blue, or cold.

Does the distribution suggest joint, skin, tendon, or circulation involvement? Do I need an X-ray after my injury? Which movements are safe while swelling settles? What changes should prompt urgent reassessment?
