Hands feel swollen but are not

Short answer
A swollen feeling without visible swelling can come from tight tissues, irritated joints, nerve symptoms, or altered sensation, and careful observation helps separate them.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why hands may feel puffy
A feeling of fullness may occur when tendons or joints are irritated after repetitive work, even before visible swelling appears. Tingling, pins and needles, burning, or symptoms that worsen at night may suggest pressure or irritation affecting a nerve. Neck or wrist problems can sometimes change sensation in the hand. Tight rings, reduced finger movement, and tenderness point more toward local tissue or joint irritation. Rheumatoid Arthritis may present with hand discomfort and swelling, although a normal-looking hand does not confirm or exclude it. A previous wrist injury can also leave altered movement or sensitivity.
Ways to check the symptom
Notice whether the sensation affects one hand or both, and whether it involves particular fingers. Record triggers such as typing, gripping, cycling, sleeping with bent wrists, or exposure to cold. Take breaks from repetitive activity and keep the wrist in a neutral, comfortable position. Gently move the fingers and wrist without stretching into pain. Check that rings, watches, or tools are not tight. A clinician can test strength, sensation, circulation, and joint movement to identify the next step.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if the sensation lasts, repeatedly interrupts sleep, causes clumsiness, or comes with weakness or dropping objects. Seek urgent care for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, new trouble speaking, a cold or pale hand, severe pain after injury, or rapidly developing redness and warmth. Fever with a painful hand also needs prompt medical attention.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms follow a particular nerve or tendon? Should my neck, wrist, or hand be examined? Which activities should I temporarily change? Would nerve testing or imaging be useful if the sensation continues?

Questions people ask
Can a hand feel swollen without actual swelling?
Yes. Irritated joints or tendons and altered nerve sensation can create tightness or fullness without obvious enlargement.
Should I massage the hand?
Use only gentle, comfortable movement. Avoid forceful massage when there is pain, numbness, injury, redness, or warmth.
