What should you know about hand trauma swelling?

Hand trauma swelling can accompany bruising, a sprain, dislocation, or fracture, and the injury pattern determines how quickly it needs assessment. Pain, tenderness, reduced movement, colour change, and the way the injury happened help a clinician judge the problem. A small-looking injury can still affect a joint or bone.

Swelling after a fall onto the hand may involve the wrist, including a distal radius fracture. A twist can injure a ligament, while a direct blow may bruise tissue or damage a finger or thumb joint. If swelling is accompanied by warmth in several joints or repeated episodes without a clear injury, Rheumatoid Arthritis or another inflammatory cause may need consideration. Broader puffiness is described as Hand Swelling.

Remove rings and tight jewellery, then rest the hand from gripping and impact. Raise it when possible and place a cold pack wrapped in cloth over the swollen area for brief periods. Keep nearby fingers gently mobile if this does not increase pain, but do not straighten a visibly bent digit or test strength repeatedly. Cover any wound with a clean dressing and arrange assessment when function is reduced or the injury was forceful.

Go for urgent assessment when the hand or finger is deformed, severely painful, open, increasingly swollen, or impossible to move. Immediate help is needed for a blue, pale, cold, or numb hand, or for bleeding that will not stop with gentle pressure. Even without these signs, arrange review if pain and swelling are not improving or normal use remains difficult.
