What should you know about hand therapy massage?

Short answer
Hand therapy massage may ease soft-tissue tightness or scar sensitivity, but pressure must match the injury, inflammation, and healing stage.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible role
- Comfort, scar mobility, or soft-tissue movement
- Use caution
- Fresh swelling, wounds, warmth, infection, or healing after surgery
- Stop if
- Tingling, burning, bruising, more swelling, or less movement develops
How massage fits rehabilitation
A trained therapist may use light contact, movement with soft-tissue work, or scar techniques to improve comfort and help a hand move more freely. Massage does not repair every cause of pain, and it is not a substitute for assessing a fracture, nerve problem, tendon injury, or inflamed joint. It may be considered within care for De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, Hand Osteoarthritis, or recovery after a Distal Radius Fracture, with modifications for each situation.
Fresh swelling, warmth, infection, an unhealed wound, or a recently operated area may need protection rather than pressure. Firm rubbing can irritate sensitive nerves and healing tissues.
Use touch carefully
Have a hand therapist demonstrate the location, direction, and pressure before trying self-massage. Keep contact gentle and brief at first, avoid pressing directly on a sharp or hot area, and check the skin afterwards. Pair any massage with the prescribed movement or tendon-gliding work rather than using it to push through pain. Stop if tingling, burning, bruising, increased swelling, or reduced movement appears. A Hand Therapy assessment can show whether massage is suitable and what alternative would be safer.
When massage is not the next step
Seek prompt medical advice for redness that spreads, warmth with fever, discharge, a new wound, sudden weakness, numbness, a locked finger, or pain that escalates after touch. Urgent assessment is appropriate after major trauma, visible deformity, or a finger that becomes pale, blue, or cold. Do not massage over suspected infection or an unassessed fracture.
Questions to raise
Ask whether your diagnosis allows massage, which tissues should be avoided, and whether heat, movement, splinting, or another treatment is more suitable. Ask how to distinguish normal temporary tenderness from a flare that requires a review.

Questions people ask
Can massage cure hand pain?
Massage may support comfort and movement, but the underlying cause still needs appropriate assessment and treatment.
Is deep pressure better for a stiff hand?
No. Pressure should be tailored to the tissue and diagnosis; deep pressure can worsen an irritated or healing area.
