What should you know about hand therapy at home?

Short answer

Hand therapy at home can support recovery through carefully chosen movement, strength, and function practice matched to your condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What home practice involves

A hand therapy plan may address swelling, stiffness, weakness, scar sensitivity, coordination, or difficulty using the thumb and fingers. The right exercises depend on healing stage and diagnosis. Home work may be useful after a Distal Radius Fracture, with Hand Osteoarthritis, or alongside care for Rheumatoid Arthritis. De Quervain's Tenosynovitis and Dupuytren's Contracture need different approaches, so copying an exercise from another person can aggravate symptoms.

A therapist may teach gentle range-of-motion drills, tendon-gliding patterns, splint use, pacing, and ways to modify dressing, cooking, or keyboard work. The aim is controlled practice that leaves the hand no worse after it has settled.

Build a safe routine

Use the exact repetitions and resistance your therapist gives you, moving slowly enough to notice catching or sharp pain. Keep the wrist and fingers aligned, breathe normally, and take breaks before fatigue changes your technique. Record which tasks increase symptoms and whether swelling or stiffness eases after rest. Heat may help stiffness for some people, while a cool pack may feel better after activity; protect the skin and stop if either worsens symptoms. A Hand Therapy appointment can help adjust the programme.

When to pause and seek help

Stop an exercise and contact your clinician if pain becomes sharp, swelling increases and remains raised, a finger locks, sensation changes, or strength suddenly drops. Seek urgent care for a deformed finger or wrist, a cold or discoloured digit, severe pain after injury, spreading redness, fever, or an open wound. Home practice should not delay review of a new or rapidly worsening problem.

Useful questions

Ask which exercises fit your diagnosis, how much discomfort is acceptable, when to use a splint, and what change means you should stop. Ask how work, lifting, driving, and sleep position should be modified while the hand heals.

Questions people ask

Can I start hand exercises without an assessment?

Gentle movement may be suitable for some problems, but a new injury or unexplained symptoms should be assessed before resistance work.

How often should I practise?

Follow the schedule provided for your hand; more sessions are not automatically better if they increase pain or swelling.
