Swollen hands during pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy changes fluid handling and circulation, so fingers may feel puffy, especially later in the day or after warmth and prolonged standing. Swelling can also be affected by wrist compression, joint inflammation, or an unrelated injury. If one hand is painful, hot, or much larger than the other, do not assume pregnancy explains it. Hand swelling is a symptom that needs to be considered alongside blood pressure, urine findings, pain, skin changes, and how quickly it developed.

Remove rings before fingers become tighter, take regular movement breaks, and rest with the hands raised. Keep hydrated according to your maternity team’s advice and avoid prolonged heat. Gentle finger opening and closing can reduce stiffness if it is comfortable; stop if pain increases. Record when swelling is worse and whether it affects both hands. Do not start a diuretic, anti-inflammatory medicine, or herbal product without checking that it is suitable during pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team promptly for sudden swelling of the hands or face, a severe or persistent headache, visual disturbance, pain beneath the ribs, vomiting, shortness of breath, or feeling unusually unwell. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or a hand that becomes blue, pale, cold, numb, or severely painful. A hot red hand with fever also needs same-day assessment.

Ask whether your blood pressure and urine should be checked, which swelling changes are expected at your stage of pregnancy, and which pain-relief or support options are safe. Mention any sudden change, one-sided symptoms, headache, or vision change.
