Hand Swelling When Running

Short answer
Hand swelling when running can follow heat, arm position, and reduced finger movement, but unusual symptoms need review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- During running
- Relax the grip and move the fingers periodically
- Track
- Heat, hand position, one-sided change, and recovery
Why running may trigger it
During a run, the hands may hang below the heart while the fingers stay curled or still. Heat can widen blood vessels, and a tight grip or repeated arm position may make puffiness more noticeable. Notice whether both hands change in a similar way and whether swelling settles after cooling down and moving the fingers.
Swelling that appears with a fall, sharp wrist pain, persistent stiffness, or reduced grip may point to an injury rather than an exercise response. Inflammatory conditions such as [Rheumatoid Arthritis](/conditions/rheumatoid-arthritis/) can also cause hand swelling, but running-related timing alone does not diagnose a condition.
What to try on your next run
Loosen your grip, let the fingers open and close periodically, and keep the arms in a relaxed swing. Remove tight rings before running and avoid accessories that compress the wrist or fingers. Choose cooler conditions when possible, drink according to thirst, and stop if swelling is accompanied by pain, dizziness, weakness, or feeling unwell.
After the run, elevate the hands briefly and compare them with each other. If the pattern repeats, note temperature, distance, pace, hydration, hand position, and how quickly it settles. Read the [Hand Swelling](/symptoms/hand-swelling/) guide for broader symptom context.
When to stop and seek help
Stop exercising and seek urgent help for chest discomfort, breathlessness, faintness, a blue or cold hand, severe pain, new numbness or weakness, or rapidly increasing one-sided swelling. Arrange medical advice when swelling persists long after exercise, keeps returning, or follows a fall; a wrist injury such as a [Distal Radius Fracture](/conditions/distal-radius-fracture/) may need assessment.
Questions for assessment
Ask whether your pattern fits exercise-related fluid movement, whether medicines or a joint problem could contribute, and whether you should change training while symptoms are investigated. Bring notes about triggers and recovery time.

Questions people ask
Why do my hands swell when I run?
Heat, hands held down, and prolonged finger flexion can contribute to temporary puffiness. Recurrent, persistent, painful, or one-sided swelling needs assessment.
Should I keep running through swollen hands?
Stop if swelling comes with pain, colour change, numbness, weakness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, or feeling unwell. Otherwise, discuss a recurring pattern with a clinician.
