Hand swelling and kidney disease: what to know

When kidney function is reduced, the body may hold on to more salt and water. Swelling can then appear in the hands, fingers, feet, ankles, or around the eyes. It may affect both sides and may be more noticeable after rest, although patterns vary.

Hand swelling alone does not establish kidney disease. A recent injury, joint inflammation, infection, medication effect, or prolonged heat can also cause it. Notice whether the swelling is on one or both hands, whether rings feel tight, and whether you have changes in urination, unusual tiredness, breathlessness, or swelling elsewhere.

Arrange a clinical review if swelling persists, recurs, or occurs with swelling in another body area. A clinician may review your medical history and medicines, examine the hand, and consider urine and blood tests to assess kidney function and fluid balance.

Until you are assessed, remove tight rings, keep the hand comfortably elevated, and record when the swelling appears. Do not start a water tablet, stop prescribed treatment, or make a major change to salt or fluid intake without medical advice.

Seek urgent help for sudden swelling with trouble breathing, chest discomfort, faintness, confusion, or very little urine. Prompt assessment is also needed if the hand becomes hot and red, severe pain develops, the fingers change colour, or swelling follows an injury.

Ask whether the pattern of swelling suggests fluid retention or a local hand problem, whether your current medicines could contribute, and which urine or blood checks are appropriate. Mention any known kidney condition, blood pressure concerns, and recent changes in urination.
