Hand swelling from a wasp sting: what to know

A sting can trigger pain, redness, warmth, itching, and swelling around the affected area. Because the hand has limited space and fingers can swell quickly, rings may become tight. A local reaction may spread around the hand or nearby wrist without involving the whole body. A more serious allergic reaction can affect areas away from the sting and may cause widespread hives, lip or tongue swelling, wheezing, dizziness, vomiting, or faintness.

Move away from the insect and check the skin. If a visible stinger remains, gently scrape it away rather than squeezing it. Remove rings, bracelets, or watches before swelling increases. Apply a wrapped cold pack for short periods, keep the hand raised, and avoid scratching. Do not place harsh chemicals or household remedies on the sting.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat tightness, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, confusion, or widespread hives. Seek prompt medical assessment if swelling is rapidly spreading, the fingers become numb or difficult to move, pain is severe, or the skin becomes increasingly hot and tender.
