Hand Swelling During Pregnancy: Second Trimester

Pregnancy changes fluid balance and can make rings feel tight, particularly after warmth, activity, or a long period in one position. Mild swelling may affect both hands and improve after rest. Hand Swelling that is sudden, one-sided, painful, or associated with redness should not be assumed to be a normal pregnancy change. Joint pain and prolonged morning stiffness can point toward inflammation, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, while an injury can cause local swelling.

Remove rings early and rest your hands with the wrists supported. Move the fingers gently through a comfortable range, avoid prolonged gripping, and keep hydrated according to your maternity team’s advice. Note when swelling appears and whether your face, feet, or ankles are also affected. Do not start medicines, supplements, or compression products for swelling without checking that they are suitable during pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team promptly if swelling appears suddenly or becomes pronounced, especially with a severe headache, vision changes, pain beneath the ribs, breathlessness, or feeling very unwell. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or a hand that is cold, blue, very painful, or difficult to move. Fever, spreading redness, or one-sided tenderness also needs assessment. A fall or wrist injury may require evaluation for a Distal Radius Fracture.

Ask whether your swelling pattern needs a blood pressure or urine check, which hand exercises are appropriate, and what changes should prompt same-day contact. Share any headache, visual symptom, pain, or sudden change.
