Hand Swelling Between the Thumb and Index Finger

The web space between the thumb and index finger contains muscles, connective tissue, skin, and structures that help pinch and spread the fingers. Repeated pinching, lifting, gaming, tool use, or a direct knock can irritate these tissues. Pain when gripping, opening a jar, or spreading the thumb may support a local strain. A wrist injury can also cause swelling that extends into this area; a distal radius fracture is one example that needs assessment after a fall. Swelling in several hand joints with warmth and stiffness can occur with inflammatory arthritis. A cut, puncture, bite, or hot red skin may signal infection.

Remove rings and avoid forceful pinching, heavy lifting, and prolonged phone or tool use for now. Raise the hand when resting. After a recent minor injury, a cold pack wrapped in cloth and applied briefly may reduce discomfort; protect the skin and stop if it becomes numb. Keep any wound clean and covered. Gentle thumb and finger movement is reasonable only within comfort, and a clinician should guide splint use if movement is painful. Record whether the swelling follows activity, appears at rest, or is accompanied by tingling or reduced grip.

Seek urgent care if the thumb or fingers turn blue or pale, feel cold or numb, cannot move, or look crooked after an injury. Get prompt assessment for rapidly spreading redness, pus, fever, severe pain, or a bite or puncture.
