Hand swelling after a mosquito bite: what to know

Bite saliva can prompt an immune response around the puncture, causing itch, redness and a raised or puffy area. The hand may look more swollen because skin and soft tissue have limited room around the fingers. Scratching can break the skin and allow infection to develop. A painful swollen hand without a visible bite, or swelling that does not follow the expected pattern, may have another explanation such as an injury or joint inflammation.

Wash the area gently and use a cool, wrapped compress. Keep the hand raised and avoid scratching; short nails can reduce skin damage. Remove rings before swelling increases. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an anti-itch treatment is suitable for you, especially during pregnancy, for a child, or alongside other medicines. Do not squeeze the bite or apply irritating household substances.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or widespread hives. Seek prompt medical advice if swelling spreads quickly, pain becomes strong, the skin is hot, pus appears, fever develops, or finger movement is restricted. Medical review is also sensible when the bite is near the eye, symptoms keep worsening, or the hand remains markedly swollen.
