Hand swelling after angioplasty: what to know

If the catheter entered through the wrist, mild tenderness or puffiness near the puncture can occur. Swelling that spreads through the hand, becomes tight, or appears with bruising may indicate bleeding under the skin. A cool, pale, blue, numb, or weak hand can signal reduced blood flow. The procedure itself does not explain every swollen hand; infection, a clot, or unrelated joint inflammation may also be considered.

Notice when it began, whether it is worsening, and whether fingers move and feel normally. A photo can help show change over time. A swollen hand is a symptom, while conditions such as a distal radius fracture or rheumatoid arthritis have different patterns and need separate assessment.

Rest the arm and keep the hand supported above heart level when practical. Follow the discharge instructions for the access site, keep any dressing clean and dry as directed, and avoid lifting or forceful gripping until your cardiology team allows it. Do not massage a growing lump or apply heat over the puncture. Check finger colour, warmth, sensation, and movement. Contact the procedure team promptly if swelling is increasing or you are unsure whether it is expected.

Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden weakness. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly increasing hand or wrist swelling, heavy bleeding, severe pain, a cold or discoloured hand, new numbness, or inability to move the fingers. Fever, spreading redness, warmth, or drainage from the access site also needs prompt medical review.

Ask which swelling pattern is expected after your access route, how long activity restrictions apply, and which medicines should be continued. Ask how to check the pulse, warmth, sensation, and colour of the hand, and who to call outside clinic hours.
