What should you know about hand swell up?

Short answer
A hand that swells up can result from strain, injury, inflammation, heat, or fluid changes, and the safest response depends on its onset and other symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How to interpret a swollen hand
A gradual increase after repeated gripping or a hot day may settle with rest and elevation. Swelling after a knock, fall, or forced wrist movement can involve a sprain or a Distal Radius Fracture, even when the skin looks intact. Swelling in several small joints with stiffness or tenderness may occur with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Redness, warmth, discharge, fever, or worsening pain can indicate infection or another problem needing examination. Note whether one hand or both are affected, whether the fingers feel stiff, and whether you can make a gentle fist.
Safe first steps
Take off rings, bracelets, and a tight watch. Pause the activity that brought on the swelling and rest the hand in a raised, supported position. Gentle finger opening and closing can prevent unnecessary stiffness if it does not increase pain. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may be used briefly for a recent minor strain; protect the skin and stop if numbness develops. Avoid forceful stretching or heat over a hot, newly injured area.
When medical care is needed
Seek prompt care for swelling after a significant injury, visible deformity, severe pain, spreading redness, fever, or inability to move the fingers normally. Get urgent help if the hand becomes blue, pale, cold, numb, or rapidly larger. A swollen hand that does not improve, repeatedly returns, or interferes with daily tasks should be assessed even without an obvious injury.
What to ask
Ask whether the pattern suggests a tendon, joint, bone, or fluid problem; whether imaging or blood tests are appropriate; and how much movement is safe. Bring a list of medicines and describe the activity, injury, or illness that came before the swelling.
