Hand sunburn: symptoms and care

Ultraviolet radiation injures exposed skin cells, producing redness, heat, tenderness, and sometimes swelling. The hands may be missed when sunscreen is applied, especially around the backs of the fingers and knuckles. Peeling can follow as damaged surface cells shed, while blisters indicate a deeper injury. Repeated exposure contributes to sun-damaged skin and uneven texture over time.

Move indoors or cover the hands from direct sunlight. Cool the skin with a clean, cool damp cloth; avoid ice directly on the burn. Apply a plain emollient once the skin is cool and intact, drink fluids, and keep blisters unbroken. Avoid fragranced products, harsh exfoliation, and further tanning until the skin has recovered. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing on future outdoor days.

Seek prompt medical advice for large or numerous blisters, severe swelling, worsening pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Get urgent help if the burn involves the eyes or causes breathing difficulty. Do not apply a topical corticosteroid to broken or infected skin unless a clinician has advised it.
