What should you know about hand sprain swelling?

Short answer
Hand sprain swelling reflects irritated or injured ligaments, but severe pain, deformity, or loss of movement needs prompt assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First steps
- Rest from painful loading, elevate, and cool through cloth
- Avoid
- Forceful stretching and tight jewellery
Why a sprain swells
A ligament connects bones and helps guide a joint. A sudden bend, twist, fall, or forceful impact can stretch or tear some of its fibres. The body responds with local fluid and inflammation, producing swelling, tenderness, bruising, and reduced grip. Pain may be focused around a finger joint, knuckle, thumb, or wrist. A sprain can resemble a small fracture or tendon injury, so inability to use the hand normally should not be dismissed as a simple sprain.
Protect the hand during recovery
For the early phase, reduce activities that increase pain, keep the hand raised, and apply a cool pack wrapped in cloth. Gentle finger movement can limit stiffness when it is comfortable, but do not force a painful joint. A clinician may recommend Splinting to protect a healing area. Physiotherapy can guide gradual movement and grip recovery; Kinesiology Taping may be considered as part of a wider plan, not as a substitute for assessment. Remove jewellery before swelling worsens.
When a sprain needs review
Arrange prompt assessment after a significant injury, marked bruising, focal bone tenderness, or swelling that makes movement difficult. Seek urgent care for a crooked finger, numbness, pale or blue skin, a cold hand, an open wound, or inability to move the fingers. If pain and swelling are not steadily improving, the diagnosis may need reconsideration.

Which ligament or joint appears injured? Do I need imaging or a splint, and for what activities? When should I start strengthening, and which movements could delay healing?
