Hand Nerve Swelling: Symptoms and Next Steps

Fluid or inflammation around the wrist and hand can narrow the space available to a nerve. Symptoms may follow prolonged wrist bending, repetitive gripping, a blow, or a wrist fracture. Nerve symptoms can travel into particular fingers and may be worse at night or during a sustained position. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause joint and tendon inflammation that contributes to pressure around nearby nerves. Visible hand swelling itself is better considered separately from the altered sensation.

Avoid leaning on the wrist and take breaks from activities that keep it bent or require repeated gripping. Keep the wrist in a neutral, comfortable position and remove tight jewellery. Elevation may help general swelling. Do not use a tight brace without guidance, because excessive pressure can aggravate symptoms. Arrange a clinical assessment if tingling persists, returns frequently, or is accompanied by weakness.

Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, inability to move the hand, loss of sensation that is spreading, severe pain after an injury, or a hand that is cold, pale, or blue. Rapid swelling with redness, fever, or a wound also needs prompt assessment. These signs can involve circulation, infection, fracture, or significant nerve compression.

Ask which nerve distribution matches your symptoms, whether the wrist or neck could be contributing, and whether testing is needed. Note which fingers tingle, when symptoms occur, any loss of grip, and whether swelling or an injury came first.
