Hand Muscle Swelling: Possible Causes

After repetitive gripping or unusual work, fluid can collect in irritated soft tissues and make the hand feel tight. A fall or blow can cause bruising, a muscle or tendon injury, or a fracture. Swelling with warmth and stiffness in several joints can occur with rheumatoid arthritis. A wrist injury, including a distal radius fracture, may also make the hand and fingers swell. Redness, increasing heat, drainage, or fever changes the concern toward infection.

Remove rings and watches, rest from forceful hand use, and keep the hand raised when practical. A wrapped cool pack can be used briefly after an injury; protect the skin and stop if it worsens discomfort. Do not puncture a swollen area or tightly wrap the hand. Book an assessment if the swelling persists, recurs, or makes finger movement difficult.

Seek urgent care if the hand becomes blue, pale, cold, numb, severely painful, or visibly deformed. Rapidly spreading redness, pus, fever, or swelling after a bite or puncture also needs prompt attention. A sudden major increase in swelling after trauma should be assessed even if the skin looks intact.

Ask whether the swelling is in muscle, tendon, joint, or skin, and whether an X-ray or other test is needed. Share when it began, any new activity or injury, skin changes, morning stiffness, and whether both hands or other joints are involved.
