What should you know about hand lichen planus?

Lichen planus can produce flat-topped or thickened bumps with colour ranging from reddish or violet to brown, depending on skin tone and healing stage. On the palms, lesions may look scaly or form thicker areas; itching can be prominent. Similar changes may affect the mouth, nails, scalp, or other skin sites, so a full examination helps confirm the pattern.

Scratching can irritate the surface and leave darker or lighter marks after inflammation settles. A clinician may diagnose it from the appearance and sometimes recommend a biopsy when another rash could look similar.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser frequently, especially after washing, and wear protective gloves for wet work or cleaning. Keep nails short and avoid rubbing or scratching. Treatment may include Topical Corticosteroids; more widespread or stubborn disease may lead to discussion of Oral Corticosteroid Treatment or another option.

Arrange medical review if the rash is spreading, painful, cracking, interfering with sleep, or affecting hand movement. Seek prompt care for mouth sores that make eating difficult, eye symptoms, signs of infection, or rapidly changing lesions.
