What should you know about a swollen and numb hand?

Numbness can occur when a nerve is compressed at the wrist, elbow, or neck. Swelling may increase pressure around a nerve, while an injury can affect both soft tissues and sensation. Inflammatory joint problems can cause puffiness and stiffness, but sudden numbness with a cold, pale, or blue hand raises concern about circulation. The pattern matters: note which fingers feel numb, whether symptoms are constant, and whether grip is weaker.

A clinician may check pulses, skin temperature and colour, strength, reflexes, sensation, and movement. If the hand became swollen after a fall, an assessment may be needed to check for a fracture or other injury.

Remove tight rings, watches, or bands if they come off without force. Rest the hand in a comfortable elevated position and avoid leaning on the wrist or elbow. Do not use heat on a newly swollen area if sensation is reduced, because numb skin can be injured without you noticing. Protect the hand from burns, cuts, and pressure while sensation is altered.

Arrange medical advice if numbness persists, returns, spreads, or is accompanied by weakness, clumsiness, or night-time symptoms. Note the start time and any recent injury, repetitive activity, new medicine, or neck pain.

Get emergency help for sudden numbness with facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe weakness, confusion, chest symptoms, or a severe headache. Seek urgent care for a hand that is cold, pale, blue, rapidly swelling, severely painful, deformed, or difficult to move, especially after an injury. Fever, spreading redness, or pus also needs prompt assessment.
