What should you know about a hand-held otoscope?

The clinician gently places a clean, single-use or disinfected speculum at the entrance of the ear. The light and magnification can help reveal wax, irritation, swelling, fluid behind the eardrum, or changes that fit an ear infection. The device does not test hearing and cannot explain every cause of ear pain.

A normal-looking eardrum is reassuring, but symptoms still matter. Movement, discharge, fever, recent swimming, a cold, and pain when the outer ear is touched can all change the assessment.

Keep the ear still during the examination and tell the clinician if the ear is very tender, has recently been injured, or has had surgery. Do not push cotton buds, fingers, or drops into the ear unless a healthcare professional has advised them. Children may be more comfortable on a parent’s lap during a child health consultation.

An otoscope is an examination tool, not a home cure. A GP consultation can help connect what is seen with your symptoms and decide whether treatment or hearing assessment is needed.

Arrange medical advice for persistent ear pain, new discharge, reduced hearing, repeated ear problems, or symptoms after an injury. Seek urgent care for severe pain with swelling behind the ear, marked dizziness, facial weakness, or a child who is unusually difficult to wake or is struggling to drink.

Ask what was visible in the canal and behind the eardrum, whether wax or fluid affected the view, and which symptoms should prompt a follow-up examination.
