Granuloma Annulare on the Hand: What to Know

The bumps may be skin-coloured, pink, or slightly darker and can form an arc or ring on the back of the hand or fingers. The surface often remains smooth, unlike many scaly rashes. Some people have no discomfort, while others notice mild itch or tenderness. A ring-shaped mark can also reflect infection, eczema, or another inflammatory condition, so appearance alone is not enough for a diagnosis. Tell the clinician about growth, recurrence, pain, scale, and any changes in sensation.

Avoid picking, harsh scrubbing, and strong home remedies. Use a plain moisturiser if the surrounding skin is dry and protect the hand from repeated friction or irritants. Photograph the area periodically from the same distance so changes are easier to describe. If the diagnosis is confirmed and the marks are bothersome, options may include topical corticosteroids or a steroid injection into the skin. The choice depends on location, thickness, extent, and personal preferences.

Book a dermatology review for a new, enlarging, recurring, or uncertain ring of bumps, particularly if it becomes painful, scaly, ulcerated, or rapidly changes. Seek earlier advice if hand swelling or altered movement interferes with daily tasks. Urgent help is appropriate for sudden severe swelling, spreading redness with fever, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Do not assume every ring-shaped lesion is granuloma annulare.
