Hand Getting Swollen: What It Can Mean and What to Do

Swelling after a fall, blow, or twist can occur with soft-tissue injury or a fracture such as a distal radius fracture. Joint inflammation can make fingers feel puffy and stiff; rheumatoid arthritis is one condition that can present with hand swelling. Swelling in one hand may differ from swelling in both hands. Compare colour, warmth, movement, and tenderness, and remove tight rings early.

Rest the hand from forceful gripping, keep it raised when practical, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Do not place ice directly on skin. Gently move the fingers within comfort unless movement is sharply painful or an injury may have caused a fracture. Avoid tight jewellery and seek tailored advice before taking medicine if you have other health conditions.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if swelling follows significant trauma, the hand looks misshapen, pain is severe, or you cannot move a finger normally. Urgent care is needed for blue or pale fingers, numbness, rapidly increasing swelling, marked warmth with fever, or a wound with spreading redness. A clinician may examine circulation, sensation, joints, and tendons and decide whether imaging is needed.
